Baltimore State's Attorney Gregg L. Bernstein recently completed his second year as the City's top prosecutor. Year one was devoted to transforming our 400-person office to make it more effective and efficient. We launched more than a dozen initiatives, all of them designed to make Baltimore a safer place to live, learn, and enjoy. Examples include the creation of a sophisticated Major Investigations Unit tasked with one goal: getting the worst violent offenders off of our streets. We also transitioned to Community Prosecution to work more closely with the citizens we serve and the officers assigned to their respective neighborhoods.
In year two, the focus was on turning the new initiatives into better results for Baltimore. As the data clearly demonstrate, State's Attorney Bernstein's office is making significant progress. As you can see in the chart below, we produced a monthly conviction rate of 70 percent or better seven times last year in all felony cases, which include serious crimes of violence such as homicides and rapes. By contrast, the highest monthly rate was 67 percent during the year that preceded State's Attorney Bernstein's election.
